London Artists Featured in Fundraising Exhibition and Auction in Support of the Canadian Bee Research Foundation and The Arts Project

London, ON – September 11, 2009 – The BeeCause art exhibition and auction begins Tuesday, September 15, 2009 and runs until Saturday, September 26, 2009. The show features 20 selected works of art from over 140 submissions by 70 Canadian artists. Three London-based artists, Angela Fisher, Justin Thompson, Katherine Vanderhaeghe, are included in the eclectic collection. The works will be featured in the live auction at the BeeCause gala on Thursday, September 17, 2009 with Master of Ceremony, Bill Brady. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Arts Project for $20 (call, 519-642-2767).

Angela Fisher studied at H.B. Beal Secondary School, Fanshawe College at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. Angela’s grandmother, a Chippewa native, taught her to take the time to see and respect what the world has to offer. Beauty is created everywhere, living among us. She also taught her that you can recreate that beauty with paint and a surface to paint on. Angela would like to pass on her grandmothers teachings through her art: A respect for all creation, for nature, for our planet, for animals, and most of all, for ourselves. When approached with the concept of BeeCause Exhibition, Fisher thought back to a time when she was a child laying on the lawn at her grandparents house: "A bee hovered inches from my face and landed right next to me on a flower. I was so close I could see the pollen on its furry legs. I knew instantly, what I was going to paint."

Justin Thompson was born and raised in London Ontario and showed an interest in art from an early age. He started at Lester B. Pearson School for the arts, and then went on to the Beal Art post-secondary program where he specialized in ceramics and 3-D design. Strongly influenced by his mother’s love for mid-century modern furniture, Justin now channels his creative energy in designing and building furniture as a professional cabinetmaker. The piece is a collage of machine shaped, hand-sculpted, sanded and stained, solid wood in a variety of species, with natural honeycomb.

Katherine Vanderhaeghe is a fourth year art student at the University of Western Ontario. Her specialty is both analogue and digital photography. Her work is heavily influenced by her background in Socio-Cultural Anthropology and she is very interested in gender roles and expectations in society. For the triptych "Wisdom, Regeneration and Obedience", she was comparing traditional roles and views of women to the symbolism of bees as feminine through the collection of pollen from flowers.
